Island Beach
State Park
One of the last undeveloped barrier islands on the Eastern Seaboard — 10 miles of pristine beach, towering sand dunes, saltwater marshes, NJ’s largest osprey colony, and zero commercial development. A nature lover’s counterpoint to the Shore’s boardwalk scene.

⚠️
Critical: Island Beach State Park fills to capacity and closes to new vehicles most summer weekends by 9–10 AM. Once closed, no entry until cars leave. Arrive by 8 AM or visit on a weekday. This is the most important planning fact about this park.

Island Beach State Park is the antidote to the Jersey Shore’s boardwalk bustle — a 10-mile stretch of pristine, undeveloped barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Barnegat Bay that looks almost exactly as it did thousands of years ago. No arcades, no rides, no development of any kind. Just miles of towering sand dunes, white beach, maritime forests, saltwater marshes, and an extraordinary concentration of wildlife including New Jersey’s largest osprey colony with over 50 active nests.

The park protects 3,000 acres and hosts approximately one million visitors annually, making it one of the most visited state parks in New Jersey — and one of the most beloved. Swimming, surf fishing, surfing, kayaking, hiking, and birding are the primary activities. A dedicated team of naturalists runs year-round programs including guided canoe paddles through the Sedge Islands Marine Conservation Zone, sunset bonfire beach walks, surf lessons, clamming tours, and Junior Naturalist camps for children.

For World Cup visitors who want a complete break from the amusement park and boardwalk circuit — a genuine encounter with untouched coastal nature — Island Beach is unlike anything else within 90 minutes of Atlantic City. The trade-off is that it requires early planning: the park is so popular it closes to new vehicles most summer weekends by 9–10 AM. Weekday visits are far easier and equally rewarding.

Activities in the Park
🏊
Ocean Swimming
Two designated swimming areas with lifeguard coverage during summer. Swimming permitted only in lifeguarded zones during guard hours. Strong rip currents possible — know the signs.
🎣
World-Class Surf Fishing
IBSP is renowned among NJ’s saltwater anglers for striped bass and bluefish. Summer flounder, weakfish, and tautog along the north Barnegat Inlet jetty also excellent. 4WD beach access with mobile fishing permit.
🏄
Surfing & Windsurfing
Surfing allowed south of the designated swimming beaches. Windsurfing permitted in marked areas at the extreme southern end. Naturalist-led surf lessons available through the nature program.
🛶
Kayaking & Canoeing
Bayside access for kayaking and canoeing through the Sedge Islands. Guided naturalist paddle tours available through islandbeachnatureprograms.org. Note: A15 bayside access area closed through May 9, 2026 for shoreline work.
🦅
Birding & Wildlife Watching
NJ’s largest osprey colony (50+ nests), peregrine falcons, herons, shorebirds, waterfowl, and migrating songbirds. The Sedge Islands are a critical stop on the Atlantic Flyway. Bring binoculars.
🥾
Hiking & Nature Trails
Miles of trails through nine distinct plant communities — maritime forest, dunes, saltwater marsh, freshwater pond, and more. The Emily DeCamp Herbarium at the Forked River Interpretive Center catalogs 400+ preserved plant specimens.
🚴
Biking
Cycling permitted on the park road. A scenic ride through the protected island with ocean views on one side and bay views on the other — one of the more serene cycling experiences on the Shore.
🐴
Horseback Riding
Horseback riding permitted in designated areas of the park — one of very few Shore destinations where this is allowed. Check park regulations for current permitted zones before visiting.
The Three Park Zones — North to South
🏊 Northern Natural Area
Primary recreation zone — the two swimming beaches, picnic areas, and main facilities are here. Most visitors spend their day in this section. Lifeguarded in season.
🏛️ Central Area
The Nature Center (Forked River Interpretive Center) and Aeolium naturalist station are located approximately 7 miles south of the entrance. Home base for naturalist programs and the Emily DeCamp Herbarium.
🌿 Southern Natural Area
The most pristine and protected section — limited access to protect nesting shorebirds during breeding season. World-class surf fishing along the beach and at the Barnegat Inlet jetty. Surfing zone. The most “wild” part of the park.

🏄 Surf IBSP — 5-Day Beginner Surf Camp
5-day surfing adventure for beginners. Games, lessons, stewardship, and ocean time. Led by IBSP Naturalists. Foam boards provided.

🐦 Jr. Naturalist Field Experience
Week-long field experience for ages 6–12. Fishing, seining, crabbing, clamming, birding, and shell hunting. Led by park Naturalists.
🦅 The Osprey Colony: Island Beach State Park is home to New Jersey’s largest osprey colony — over 50 active nesting pairs along the bayside shores. Ospreys are striking birds, easily visible to visitors in the park from spring through fall. If you’ve never watched an osprey dive and pull a fish from the water in real time, this is one of the best places on the East Coast to see it happen.
📍 World Cup Travel Note: Island Beach is ~55 minutes from Atlantic City — best as a dedicated full day rather than a half-day add-on. The ideal visit: arrive at the gate by 8am on a weekday, spend the morning swimming and hiking, grab a picnic lunch, spend the afternoon fishing or kayaking. The naturalist programs (especially the sunset paddle) are among the most memorable experiences in this entire guide for visitors who want something genuinely different from theme parks and boardwalks.
