Estell Manor Park is Atlantic County’s most popular park — and the one that surprises visitors most. On the surface it’s a quiet 1,700-acre county park in the Pine Barrens, 3.5 miles south of Mays Landing. Underneath, it’s a landscape layered with three distinct historical eras, each of which left physical traces now being slowly reclaimed by the forest. Walking the 27 miles of flat, packed-sand trails here means walking through centuries of South Jersey’s story: a Native American homeland, a 19th-century glass manufacturing village, and the ruins of a World War I industrial town of 8,000 workers that once included 24 miles of railroad track and a complete municipal infrastructure.
The WWI chapter is the most extraordinary. The Bethlehem Loading Company established a munitions proving ground and loading plant here around 1910 — so remote that the Pine Barrens isolation was considered an asset for explosives testing. A full industrial town called Belcoville grew up around it, housing over 8,000 employees. When operations ceased after WWI, the forest quietly moved back in. Over 100 years later, you hike past crumbling brick walls, concrete foundations, and factory remnants with trail names that make the history unmistakable: Gunpowder Trail, Smokeless Powder Trail, TNT Road, Purple Heart Drive. Former railroad beds became the park’s characteristic flat, easy trails.
The Warren E. Fox Nature Center at the park entrance provides maps, houses live animals (fish, turtles, snakes), and — remarkably — lends bicycles free of charge. Leave a copy of your ID, take a bike, and explore the trail network at whatever pace you choose.
Three Centuries of History — All Visible on the Trails
Pre-1800
Native American Homeland — Before European settlement, this was Lenape territory. A wire-frame Native American Village display on the trails interprets this history for park visitors.
1800s
Estellville Glassworks — The Estell family operated a thriving glassmaking village here in the early 1800s, taking advantage of the Pine Barrens’ abundant wood fuel and silica sand. The ruins of the glassworks are visible along the History Trail, with interpretive signs explaining each structure’s function.
1910s
Bethlehem Loading Company — WWI Munitions Town “Belcoville” — The Bethlehem Loading Company established an ordinance proving ground and munitions loading plant here around 1910. A full town of 8,000 workers grew up in the forest, complete with 24 miles of railroad track. When production ended after WWI, the workers left and the forest reclaimed everything. Crumbling brick walls, concrete foundations, and the trail names themselves are what remain today.
Now
Pine Barrens Forest Reclamation — Over 100+ years, the Pinelands forest has slowly grown back through and around the ruins, creating one of the most visually striking trail experiences in New Jersey — soaring trees filled with birdsong, with crumbling industrial walls emerging from the undergrowth.

Swamp Trail Boardwalk — 1.8 Miles · Fully Wheelchair Accessible
Starts directly behind the Warren E. Fox Nature Center · No bikes permitted on boardwalk
The Swamp Trail Boardwalk is Estell Manor’s most celebrated feature — a 1.8-mile elevated wooden trail built directly over one of the most beautiful sections of the park. Starting behind the Nature Center, it crosses streams, passes through a cathedral cedar swamp, winds past the ruins of the Bethlehem Loading Company, and reaches two bump-out platforms with unobstructed views of the South River. The trail ends at Artesian Well Road, where a natural artesian well emerges from the ground — one of South Jersey’s quiet natural curiosities. A boardwalk extension connects to the Oak Ridge Trail for longer loop options. The entire boardwalk is fully wheelchair and stroller accessible, making it the most accessible way to experience the park’s most stunning habitat. Download a trail map at the Nature Center or from the Atlantic County Parks website before setting out — trail intersections are not always well-marked.

📍 World Cup Context: Estell Manor Park is about 35 minutes from Atlantic City — best as a half-day or full-day inland excursion on a non-match day. The combination of historic ruins, accessible boardwalk, and free bike loans makes it genuinely unusual. The Swamp Trail Boardwalk alone — 1.8 miles elevated over a cedar swamp with South River views — is among the most memorable short walks in Atlantic County. Combine with a stop at the Warren E. Fox Nature Center and the Veterans Cemetery, and you have a complete half-morning that feels nothing like the Shore.
